Character of the week: Hope « Paulo Coelho’s Blog.

According to the dictionary: a tendency of the spirit to consider something as probable; the second of the theological virtues; expectation; supposition; probability.

For the ancient Greeks: In one of the classic myths of the Creation, one of the gods, furious at the fact that Prometheus stole fire and in doing so gave men their independence, sends Pandora to marry her brother Epimetheus. Pandora brings along a box, which she is forbidden to open. However, just as happens to Eve in the Christian myth, her curiosity gets the better of her: she raises the lid to see what is inside, and at this moment all the troubles of the world spill out and spread all over the Earth. Only one thing remains inside: Hope, the only arm to combat the misfortune that has scattered throughout the world.

In a Hassidic story (Jewish tradition): At the end of the forty days of deluge, Noah emerged from the Ark. He disembarked full of hope, lit some incense, looked around him, and all he saw was destruction and death. Noah cried out:
“Lord Almighty, if you knew the future, why did you create man? Just for the pleasure of punishing him?”
A triple perfume rose to the sky: the incense, the perfume of Noah’s tears, and the aroma of his actions.
Then came the answer:
“The prayers of a just man are always heard. Let me tell you why I did this: so that might understand your work. You and your descendants will use hope and will always be rebuilding a world that came from nothing. In that way we shall share the work and the consequences: now we are both responsible.”

An Arab story: The great Caliph Alrum Al-Rachid decided to build a palace that would mark the grandeur of his reign. Besides the chosen terrain stood a shack. Al-Rachid asked his minister to convince the owner – an old weaver – to sell it to be demolished. The minister tried, but without any success.
Back at the palace, it was suggested that they simply expel the old man from the site.
“No,” answered Al-Rachid. “It will become part of my legacy to my people. When they see the palace, they will say: he was great. And when they see the shack, they will say: he was just, because he respected the desire of others.”


2010: Closing cycles|From Paulo Coelho’s Blog

One always has to know when a stage comes to an end. If we insist on staying longer than the necessary time, we lose the happiness and the meaning of the other stages we have to go through.
Closing cycles, shutting doors, ending chapters – whatever name we give it, what matters is to leave in the past the moments of life that have finished.

Did you lose your job? Has a loving relationship come to an end? Did you leave your parents’ house? Gone to live abroad? Has a long-lasting friendship ended all of a sudden? You can spend a long time wondering why this has happened.

You can tell yourself you won’t take another step until you find out why certain things that were so important and so solid in your life have turned into dust, just like that. But such an attitude will be awfully stressing for everyone involved: your parents, your husband or wife, your friends, your children, your sister.
Everyone is finishing chapters, turning over new leaves, getting on with life, and they will all feel bad seeing you at a standstill.

Things pass, and the best we can do is to let them really go away.

That is why it is so important (however painful it may be!) to destroy souvenirs, move, give lots of things away to orphanages, sell or donate the books you have at home.

Everything in this visible world is a manifestation of the invisible world, of what is going on in our hearts – and getting rid of certain memories also means making some room for other memories to take their place.
Let things go. Release them. Detach yourself from them.

Nobody plays this life with marked cards, so sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. Do not expect anything in return, do not expect your efforts to be appreciated, your genius to be discovered, your love to be understood.

Stop turning on your emotional television to watch the same program over and over again, the one that shows how much you suffered from a certain loss: that is only poisoning you, nothing else.

Nothing is more dangerous than not accepting love relationships that are broken off, work that is promised but there is no starting date, decisions that are always put off waiting for the “ideal moment.”

Before a new chapter is begun, the old one has to be finished: tell yourself that what has passed will never come back.
Remember that there was a time when you could live without that thing or that person – nothing is irreplaceable, a habit is not a need.
This may sound so obvious, it may even be difficult, but it is very important.

Closing cycles. Not because of pride, incapacity or arrogance, but simply because that no longer fits your life.

Shut the door, change the record, clean the house, shake off the dust.

Stop being who you were, and change into who you are.

2011 is About to Start!!!

Well one more year of our life ending tomorrow but on the other had one new year is starting and that’s the beauty of duality in nature. What you have planned for the new year? I am gonna share how I am planning to welcome my new dawn of the year 2011.
As you may have read my article about new year planning. so I am taking some practical steps for my new year planning.
Today after dinner I pick up the paper and pen and started the draft of it. I did the brainstorming. Some of the sections I would like to share here with you. These are the important sections of my new year resolution
1.Profession Goals
2.Passion Goals
3.Contribution Goals
4.Self Improvement Goals
5.Adventure and Innovation Goals
6.Renewing Childhood Beauties
7.Making good new habits and giving up old dis-empowering ones

It was a very helpful activity and I will finalize it by tomorrow evening and the chart and paper notes of my goals will hang on everywhere with the dawn of new year. I will start the day with achieving my first goal on the list and that is to go early to bed and get up early in the morning. Recently I have developed a bad habit of staying late till the morning and then sleeping all the day. That makes life very boring and so I included it as one of my goal to give up this bad habit.
For me this is all how I celebrate the day. I don’t go in nay party or club as I don’t have any such facility but I like it.
I would suggest you all that whatever you all do but make sure that you have your year resolution ready as the first thing on the day of new year.
Why I am emphasizing on having a new year plan? Have you ever thought why the government and large organization make budget once in a year? Why don’t they keep all the money in a bank and spend as needed?Obviously then there are chances that they will end up doing some thing remarkably good in the first quarter and then the whole nation will starve to death and will not be able to enjoy what they achieved in that short period or if they are too careful and avoiding risks then they may end up doing nothing and having the whole budget intact. The making of new plan systematizes the whole process and it is perfectly true for an individual as well.
There are two options for you; either to start off your year not knowing what you have to do tomorrow or you should plan how your year will end up. Isn’t it good to know the future earlier? Once you make the plan and act upon it then that is how you make your own destiny.
so still there is time to make it and make your year a promising one. I wish you all the best and Happy new year in advance.

Mental Modeling|Harold Ennulat Says

I’m always looking for new ways of doing something. Mental Modeling is a concept where you ask yourself, “If I were designing this, how would I want it to work?” It transcends coding and puts coding off to the side for a while as we think through and layout how we want a particular thing to work ideally. It is an exercise that perhaps many of us do instinctively. I just ran across an article that describes this process and shows that “Mental Modeling” has been (at least somewhat) formalized.

The article is entitled: “The Secret to Designing an Intuitive UX“. UX means “User Experience”.

The article points out that it really isn’t about our “mental model” when we design something, but our users “mental model” about how they expect something to work that we need to try to capture. We may choose to implement a model that is different from the users “mental model”, but this is best done with an awareness of a users expectation or mental model. Being aware of the users mental models that might be in operation when approaching your implementation, the designer can do things to smooth the users transitional experience to the new model.

click to see detailThe author, Dr. Susan Weinschenk puts it this way: “I say that the secret to designing an intuitive user experience is making sure that the conceptual model of your product matches, as much as possible, the mental models of your users. If you get that right you will have created a positive and useful user experience”.

Random Thoughts

Well, I was waiting to come up with some good posts for my blog after having a long thinking and the result was one post in a week but then i thought why shouldn’t I be spontaneous. So here I am,writing this post directly in my blog editor without a draft. What ever comes to my mind I am gonna put it down and I am not gonna care who will read it and what they will perceive of it. It is my world and I have absolute freedom to express myself here.
Secondly being a science guy I always tried to come up with some scientific ‘touch’ post and that also led me in reduced number of my blog post. Again that was a bad restriction I had put on myself. I love being passionate of science and technology but from now on I will not let it to be a hurdle in the way to express myself and I

suggest you too that don’t make your passion and love a restriction for yourself. Use them in the best possible way.Enjoy each moment of your life.
Does that mean I am happy always? No not at all. I do commit mistakes and regret for them. Last night I did waste my time in a worse way and when I woke up in the morning (well it was actually 11am, not exactly morning) I was regretting and to ease it some how I put a facebook status of ‘How can the day end good when it starts off with a regret’. But I was wrong. The day did go well and I did some good work and the day is not over yet.
so the second thing to remember is that the future is never dependent on the past. Each moment is exclusive and if one want to be happy then it doesn’t matter how the near or far past was.
Wow!! isn’t that a good post. Ya i hope it is but I don’t want or expect any one to read it or like it because I write for myself and I like it. Thats my only concern but if you read it and it helped you one way or the other then it will be a bonus of happiness for me. Cheers

Lets Welcome New Year With a Plan

New Year is about to start. Why are we so excited about this single day? Isn’t it same as all other 364 days of the year. Yes it is same but it has some specialty and that lies at its essence. If you don’t get that then it is useless to celebrate and wish. The simple lesson of this day is to do the review of the last year and make new plan for the coming year.
* The first thing is to do a review of the last year. What you had planed and how many of them you achieved. If you were unable to stick to your plan then it is the time to curse yourself. Do say what a stupid being you are. That was a nice plan but didn’t stick to it. Try to find when and why you gave up and also what percentage of it you achieved and when? But you should know that it is also bad to remain hanged in bad memories of past so let’s move on.

* The second and important thing is to make new plans for the coming year. Many people want to dream big and fight for them but they never take any practical steps for it and if you are one of those then this is the time to break that hurdle and make New Year resolution. How to make it? It’s very simple, let’s do it.

* First of all do the brainstorming of your goals. For this you must be clear about what you want from life and also you must be realistic to set the goals. For example it may not be good medically to loss 50lb in one month even if you can do it. Then prioritize your goals to make them easy to handle one at a time.

* Make sure that your list of goals include all kinds like individual, contributory, entertainment , fulfillment etc. because if it concerns only you then with time you will feel yourself isolated and may then you find good reasons to give up working on your plan. So make the list very much balanced so that it merges you with other rather than separating you from it and the achievement of your goal should give you the sense of contribution to the society and to your dear and loved ones.

* Break big goals into smaller ones. Concentrate on achieving the small tasks one at a time. Together, they will contribute towards your larger goal

* Make timeline and work on short term goals. The achievement of these short term goals will reinforce you and will give you the energy to work on long term goals.

* Write down your goals on peace of paper and hang them around in your room, office and in car so that you may not loss your focus. Because most people do the planning but then they forget it once they get stuck in some other day to day problems.

* Use some sort of reinforcement which should help you to remain stick to your goal in stressed times. One solution for this may be sharing your plan with other people like with your friends and let them know what your plan is for the year and tell them to ask you occasionally of how the plan is going?

* Review last year plan (if you had one) and learn from that experience and try to include both negative and positive experiences of it in the new plan.

* Plan out a review schedule. It is very important for not to loss focus. It may be the first day of each month. I do it once in a month when I am in bed, I do a recap of how I worked on my plan during that month, was I ahead or behind the plan and that helps me great deal to know my progress.

* You may need to change the plan. Some of the goal you had included may not be achieved. You should not get panic. Try to find out why you failed? Were your effort less or was it unrealistic goal? Or you end up achieving all the goals well before time; if you are determined and smart; and then you may need to add some new goals to the plan. But don’t say I am done and now I am free bird, always have a plan for the whole year.

* Once you achieve the short term goals then do celebrate it and encourage yourself for doing such a great work. But I don’t mean that you should give a party each time ,well that’s good if you can afford but the least you should do is go to your room and shout loudly “I did it, I am a genius”. Yes you are a genius and you deserve it.

What you are thinking now. Grab a pen with your diary and start the pleasure of work. Don’t build palace in air. Take some good steps and make sure that by the dawn of new year a chart of your goals is hanging on the four walls of your room with large and bold font the word ‘I CAN DO IT!’ written at the top. Control Your thinking and get your actions controlled

I have been trying to be an imaginative person but its not that easy. I read many books like Awaken the Giant within You, unlimited power, Alchemy, A walk to remember and by now I have only learned the art of controlling my thinking.
There was a time when I use to regret after doing some blunders and then i Was thinking why i did that and what a stupid I am to do such nonsenses.
But now I am glad that I have got the control of my thinking and so my actions and I no more make those blunders and so no more regrets.
But does that mean my past will have no effect on my present and future. It will have but One have to associate severe pain to the bad habits so as to avoid them for the future. and replace them with new empowering thoughts. If the bad and dis-empowering thoughts are not replaced then it is sure that the mind will roll back to those old patterns as they have pleasures associated with them.
Avoiding to adopt new habits is as important as giving u old ones. I am lucky enough that i have been very successful in this area too. Due to the stress of joblessness I thought many a times of taking smoking as a temporary solution but I never allowed this thinking to dominate me and the only reason for that was proper using of the technique given in the book Awaken the Giant Withing You.
So today I am glad that I am writing this article after fulfilling my commitment to myself and its the first time that I kept the promise made to myself.

Save All Your Bookmarks

Over the years I was facing the problem of loosing the bookmarks which i had made,when the Operating system(OS) was getting corrupt. I figured out many ways to save my bookmarks.Some of which are listed below
1. I saved the browser (be it any) folder to driver other than the one with OS but this was not a good solution specially when the OS was lost because of virus attack. In that case saving such files means spreading the virus attack to newly installed system. By the way this browser folder is always hidden and located in the folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Application Data…..
2. the second way was to save a an HTML file or making some backup file. To do this follow these
2a. go to bookmark from the top bar
2b. Go to organize bookmark
2c. export HTML file or
2d. Make Backup

This will save a a file of your bookmarks.
But i was even not satisfied with this since it is one time and I need to save a file or make a backup each time i added a new bookmark and imagine if you are adding every next site as bookmark then you will end up only saving a bookmark backup file.

Then today i googled how can I synchronize the bookmarks with my emails and there I found the so for best way. Its basically a yahoo service which saves all your old and new bookmarks automatically and you can access it from anywhere. To do this follow these steps
1.go to the site delicious and sign up.Its free
2. Make a profile
3.Install the adds on for Firefox (I have no idea if it can be used with other browsers) and the name of the add on is “Delicious Bookmarks”
4. To add you all old bookmarks go to setting and import and in a moment it will import all your bookmarks.

It saves your bookmarks with your yahoo mail id. So for this seems to me the best solution and if you are not using yahoo then Google ‘save bookmarks to gmail’ and you will find some good ways for that too but for me Delicious is best and I will stick to it. Let me know if you have some good idea other than this to save bookmarks.
